On the 21st of March 2026, OpaL Students Empowerment Foundation proudly hosted the inaugural OPAL’S GOT TALENT event in collaboration with Youth in Human Rights International and Cinecomm at Opal Students Apartments in Naturena, marking a significant milestone in student engagement, creative expression, and human rights awareness. The event commenced with impactful keynote presentations delivered by distinguished speakers, Sharleen Whornitz and Glory Matipile, who set the tone for the day by addressing critical themes around youth empowerment, leadership, and social responsibility. The programme was seamlessly guided by the reigning Mr Opal Students 2025/2026, Bongani Xaba and Miss OpaL Students 2025/2026, Nothando Sikhonde, who served as Masters of Ceremony, facilitating engaging discussions and interactive Q&A sessions that enriched the overall experience.

The event transitioned into a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere, with attendees gathering for group photographs at the OpaL Students Soccer Field, fostering a sense of unity and community. The highlight of the day—the talent showcase—captured the essence of the initiative, featuring over 14 participants who demonstrated exceptional creativity across a wide range of disciplines, including dramatic poetry, spoken word, dance, singing, rap, and visual arts. The picnic-style audience setting further enhanced the experience, creating an intimate and engaging environment that celebrated artistic diversity and self-expression. Structured across three competitive rounds, the talent segment emphasized performance excellence, originality, and audience engagement.

Additional contributions from key figures further elevated the event, with the Student Life Manager, Mrs Phala and Miss Doricah Khasalela, the Primula House residence manager, taking on a dynamic guest MC role and exemplifying collaborative leadership. Mrs Patricia Tshitema also graced the stage as a judge alongside with Ms Onica Kubheka, the residence manager of Naturena campus and a brilliant, fashion designer and Opal Students management special award winner, Antonio Maluleka.

Primula House’s own poet, popularly known as “Cocomelon,” emerged as the first-ever OPAL’S GOT TALENT winner, setting a high standard for future editions of the event. Following her impressive win, Anele Nxumalo secured second place with an outstanding performance, while Amukelani Makhubela claimed third place, both leaving a lasting impression on everyone present. The event drew a strong turnout, with students coming out in large numbers from both Primula House and Naturena, the hosting campus. The atmosphere was filled with unity, excitement, and pride showcasing the strength of the Opal Students community. The day ended with student’s interviews with Cinecomm.

In essence, Opal’s Got Talent Season 1 was not just about competition, it was about celebrating individuality, embracing creativity, and building a strong, connected community. Rain or shine, the event proved one thing: Opal Students are fearless, talented, and unstoppable. This unforgettable experience will continue to inspire many more students to step onto the stage, own their gifts, and let their light shine.
