On the 19th of July 2025, the Opal Students Foundation and Bono Property Group, in collaboration with the Opal Students 2025 semi-finalists, hosted a meaningful Mandela Day celebration at Nkosi Haven. This community engagement initiative was aimed at giving back to vulnerable groups, promoting unity, and preparing the semi-finalists for the values and responsibilities of pageant leadership rooted in service. The theme was centered on Ubuntu and emphasized unity, love, and empowerment. The semi-finalists applied the asset-based community development approach by recognizing and building on the existing strengths, talents, and gifts, within the Nkosi Haven children. Through a vibrant talent show, the children were given the opportunity to showcase their abilities in singing, dancing, poetry, and storytelling, affirming their self-worth and potential.

In addition to the asset-based community development approach, the event also integrated the person centered approach by creating a nurturing space where each child felt seen, heard, and valued. The activities were designed to foster emotional expression, self-confidence, and connection, affirming the importance of dignity, empathy, and respect in development work. Moreover, the sustainable livelihood approach was incorporated through skill building exercises and engagements that encouraged long-term growth and resilience. Semi-finalists were not only role models but also facilitators of empowerment, sharing practical knowledge and inspiring hope for a better future.

The event was a powerful reminder of how young people can drive social change when given the platform and purpose. Mandela Day 2025 at Nkosi Haven left lasting impressions of joy, connection, and possibility aligning perfectly with the legacy of Nelson Mandela and the vision of the Opal Students Empowerment Foundation and Bono Property Group.
